Schools opening

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to : We, the undersigned, residents of West Berkshire, call on the Leader of the West Berkshire Council and executive member for Children, Young People and Education or the equivalent to publish clear scientific evidence that shows that the opening of schools and other childcare settings in West Berkshire will not increase the risk of infection from Covid-19 in our communities. If the evidence shows that further opening will lead to an increased risk then they should use all their powers to prevent a further opening of schools in West Berkshire on 1st June, as advised by the UK Government. Other Councils across the UK have taken the following approach: Liverpool City Council’s director of children and young people’s services, Steve Reddy, said: ‘Our guiding principle is that schools can only reopen to other pupils when it is safe to do so and not a moment before. Only once we can be sure that schools are safe for both children and staff will they be able to open to more children

Also can you explain why the government do not advise the wearing of masks in the school setting and why they advise this for teachers yet also admit it limits the spread.

Can you also make information available about what your current advice to schools is and if you as a council are offering support in the way of PPE and in what forms and if not why not?

I would appeal to you to look at sticking with the previous system, so you’re not running the risk of wide spread illness after the widely publicised flouting of lockdown. The last thing we want is Keyworkers to be unable to work and for whole schools to close due to the need for isolation.
