Expand Recycling Service

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to Expand kerbside recycling services to include recyclable plastics, foil and tetrapaks, etc.

The world is fast moving on in terms of advances in producing and use of recyclable materials and the public is finally getting on board with recycling its waste. However, West Berks is not keeping up with its neighbouring councils which provide vastly superior kerbside recycling. In South Oxfordshire and Windsor & Maidenhead, wheelie bins are provided to households to allow mixed recycling, and those bins take a far wider range of recycling materials than do the small boxes provided in West Berkshire. This encourages far more recycling because it is simpler to do. In addition, it avoids unnecessary pollution, not just because less goes to landfill, but also because more determined householders don't have to drive separately to the recycling centre with materials prohibited in the kerbside collections. Wheelie bins also provide a lid to keep vermin out, and leaving even washed recyclables to mount up before it's worth a trip to the tip attracts this unwanted attention.

Already a woefully inadequate service in the summer, when wheelie bins are disgustingly full of maggots owing to the bi-weekly collection, the recycling service is failing to keep up with a society that is now increasingly concerned to preserve the planet. The council should be leading us in this endeavour, not putting hurdles our the way.

Please sign the petition if you'd like to see a more extensive recycling service in West Berkshire.
