Safer crossing at Donnington

We, the undersigned, petition the Council to Make a safer place for pedestrians to cross the B4494 by The Castle Pub in Donnington

Shaw-cum-Donnington Parish Council are asking for your support for a safer crossing on Oxford Road by The Castle Pub.

Pedestrians need to cross the road here for a number of reasons:
• Walking to schools, including Trinity, Shaw-cum-Donnington Primary School, Castle School and Love Lane Pre-School
• To access the Donnington Recreation Ground to play in the park or walk the dog – this is especially popular after school and at weekends
• To get to work
• To visit local pubs and Donnington Castle

Oxford Road is always busy, with vehicles coming into and out of town from the M4, A34 and North West of Newbury. Speeding is also a major issue on this road: the Parish Council have collected data from their Speed Indicator Device nearby, showing that an average of 20 % of motorists are typically exceeding the 30mph speed limit by at least 6mph, with some vehicles travelling at more than double the speed limit in that area.

Although there is insufficient space for a standard pedestrian crossing, the Parish Council ask the Highways Authority (West Berkshire Council) to find an alternative solution – for example, by creating a speed cushion here, like the ones in Park Way and Bartholomew Street South in Newbury, with an inset section (road narrows paint), which act to slow down traffic and make it easier to cross the road.
