Introduce a 20mph Speed Limit Outside St Mary's School, Mortimer, at “School Drop-Off and Pick-Up” times
This proposal would create timed 20mph zones, applying only at key times of day when children are arriving or leaving school, and reverting to the normal speed limit at other times.
Such an approach is already used successfully in other areas (eg
Grazeley Primary School) and helps:
Improve safety for children, parents, and carers on foot and bicycle.
Reduce the risk and severity of collisions at busy school gate times.
Encourage more families to walk or cycle, easing congestion and emissions outside schools.
We ask West Berkshire Council to:
Work with the ward member(s), schools, residents and the parish council to implement this scheme;
See this as a pilot scheme for the ward, that fits with the council adminstration's commitment to implement such scheme where residents want it and in line with the Council’s commitment to "active travel" and Net Zero by 2030.
